Something keeps you constantly feeling distressed.
Going to the grocery store surrounded by people and activity creates discomfort and fear that cripples you. This fear happens whenever you attempt to be normal in public.
No place feels safe. You spend too many days in bed sleeping, trying not to think. Nothing seems reasonable, and you feel sad because dark days are too long before night finally comes.
You wonder, “Why do the thoughts of guilt go around and around in my head? I never asked to be hurt and scared. Am I to blame? Did I do something wrong? I was the one who had to run and hide.”
The fear and hypervigilance are exhausting. You try to tell yourself what happened occurred a long time ago, but it doesn’t help. Something has to give!
Trauma occurs in all sizes – Big T and Little t.
During a traumatic (big or little event) or stressful event (shock, trauma), the brain does not process information accurately. Instead, that information can get stuck or stored in the brain in unhelpful ways, negatively affecting your present-day life.
Something can trigger that old stored information in the present, causing you to have thoughts, feelings, or bodily sensations that transport you back to when the trauma occurred. This inability to overcome those triggers affects how a person sees the world and relates with others.
EMDR is an evidence-based practice to treat trauma and help facilitate the brain’s natural healing process. This method uses eye movements (similar to what occurs during REM sleep) to help reduce information processing and relieve the effects of trauma and the accompanying negative beliefs.
Following a successful EMDR session, you will not be overwhelmed when recalling the painful memories of the traumatic event. This reprocessing allows you to access positive ways of viewing the original trauma (reprocessing) and release the stored adverse emotional reactions around it (desensitization).
Overcome what keeps you in distress.
EMDR is an effective method for treating the following: Anxiety, Childhood Trauma, Depression, Flashbacks and Nightmares, Grief and Loss, Painful and Disturbing Memories, Panic Attacks, Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Abuse, Post-Traumatic Stress, Self-Esteem Issues, Social Anxiety, and many others.
Before now, these conditions were difficult and time-consuming to treat. EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and the fact that it can bring lasting relief for most types of emotional distress.
Although EMDR therapy is not always easy, my clients have found significant relief from symptoms of PTSD and other mental health struggles, allowing them to become fully functional in their daily lives.
Many clients with a lengthy history of trauma or a traumatic event report no longer experiencing disturbing and debilitating symptoms after EMDR therapy.
Clients have reported that the hard work of EMDR was worth it for them; the distressing memory they worked on no longer affects their life.
